Ceramic Festival at Cockington Court – detailed programme announced

The detailed line up of exhibitors, workshops and lectures has been announced for the prestigious two day arts event at Cockington Court next week, the Ceramics Festival 10 & 11 May.

Festival is a regional highlight for residents and visitors and will re-enforce Cockington Court’s growing reputation as cultural centre of excellence. There is a £4 entrance fee (children are FREE with paying adults) for the Makers Pavilion where visitors can meet and buy direct from 30 selected ceramic makers. (Please note that the Ceramics Festival entry ticket does not include entry to all talks and lectures - see below for further details)

Visitors to Cockington Court not purchasing a Ceramics Festival Marquee ticket will still be able to see many demonstrations and visit the free workshops, as well as visiting the Sea Change and Stableyard Craft studios which are a permanent feature at Cockington Court. 

Tickets for the inspiring talks/lectures delivered by leading practitioners such as Sandy Brown, John Wheeldon, Philip Hardaker, Ian Gregory and Bruce Chivers cost £3. There is a programme of open workshops for Festival Ticket holders, which are included in the Ceramic Festival marquee entry price of £4. Pre-booking is advisable to guarantee a place. Taja Simpson – Workshop Marquee, next to Manor House Boat Making 10am-12pm & 1pm -5pm Can you make a clay boat float on the water? Try! Work with artist Taja Simpson to create your very own ceramic boat and sail it.

Karen Abadie – Resource Room, Seachange Studios Impressions Create a tile that celebrates who you are, and tell the world a little bit about yourself. You will use clay to create impressions of things that you love, hate or want in the future and then cast these impressions in Plaster of Paris to take away – you will be amazed at the results.

Sarah John – Potters’ Circle next to the Makers’ Marquee Potters circle 10am-1pm & 2pm -5pm Come and throw a simple pot to take away. Be guided by artist Sarah John to learn how to centre the clay, open it out and pull up the walls. Each one will be an original!

Mandy- Workshop Marquee

Whacky heads!

A fun modelling workshop with artist Mandy Biscoe for children and adults. Using air-drying clay you will make a head of a favourite character, friend or family member and use Spring foliage and flowers to create a wonderful spring hair-do.

Bridget – Workshop Marquee

Memories of the seaside in clay

10am-12pm & 1pm -5pm

A tactile, hands-on experience for families to come and work together. Come and make a tile of memories of the seaside in clay with artist Bridget Arnold - imprinting using shells and seaweed from the beach or, for young children, cutting out seaside shapes.

Karen Abadie – Walled Art Garden

The Way of Tea - a celebration of the great international beverage of tea.

How do you like your tea?  Join artist Karen Abadie in creating a unique, never to be repeated, collaborative tea ceremony, combining ancient international drinking rituals with individual and family rituals that have been honed over years of enjoying this very every day, yet special, drink.  Each ceremony will complete with a joyous and ceremonial smashing of cups!

Tea Ceremonies at 12:00, 2:00pm and 4pm in The Art Garden, no booking necessary.

Torbay Development Agency Chief Executive, Steve Parrock said: “The Ceramics Festival at Cockington Court is set to be a jewel in the crown of Cockington Court’s creative calendar this year. There is a diverse range of exhibitors and workshops taking place at the Festival  next Friday and Saturday, which is a culmination of an intensive programme of arts outreach work bringing ceramics to the wider community over the last few weeks."

Cockington Court Ceramics Festival is being delivered by Torbay Development Agency through a grant of £27,420 from Arts Council England for the promotion of Art and Ceramics in Torbay.
The festival will be a regional highlight for residents and visitors and will re-enforce Cockington Court’s reputation as cultural centre of excellence. Cockington’s Kitchen Gallery has a growing reputation in the arts world as a contemporary gallery space of regional significance, having exhibited work by artists of international acclaim as well as emerging local talent.
It offers yet another high quality, accessible event, and will include an interactive and informative programme, designed to encourage the engagement of both amateurs and professionals involved in art and crafts.
Cockington Court is operated by Torbay Development Agency (TDA) - Torbay Council’s economic development company - as a visitor attraction and as part of its innovation centres project to provide wet-space craft studios and office space for media, design and web companies at the historic manor house in 460 acres of parkland.Cockington Court has undergone extensive renovation at a cost of £2.85m, part funded by the European Development Fund, Torbay Council and CABE, transforming the former aristocratic home into office space, craft studios and function rooms The European Regional Development Fund South West Competitiveness and Employment Programme 2007-2013 is managed by the Department for Communities and Local Government. The programme of investment from the European Union is helping to increase the prosperity of the region through supporting enterprise and individuals to develop ideas and plans that contribute to increased productivity and competitiveness. The total amount of investment across the seven-year programme is £108,751,309. The funding for the Cockington renovation from the European Regional Development Fund South West Competitiveness and Employment Programme as part of the Torbay Strategic Investment Framework is £1,134,113.
