The circuit is the only outdoor closed road circuit in Devon and Cornwall and can accommodate amateur and professional cycling and a range of other sporting activities. There are three different distance options that the Velopark offers:
1.Whole Track: 1.5km
British Cycling provided match funding to Torbay Council to help fund the creation of an outdoor velopark. Torbay Council made a decision during a Council meeting in May of this year to build these facilities and to match fund the remaining 50% of the cost - around £800k.
Alternative activities include athletics, jogging, nordic walking, in line skating and a range of fitness activities for people with disabilities. The Park offers a dog-free activity area that includes changing and toilet facilities, bike and helmet hire, bike storage, an office and a rest area.
Torbay’s Mayor and Leader said: “We want to attract the committed racer and members of the wider public alike who want to take part in cycling club activity. This regional centre for cycling is a great addition to Torbay’s sporting infrastructure, and really puts us on the map for cycling development as well as creating an exciting new facility for visitors and residents of Torbay who just want to come along and have fun.”
Torbay Council’s Executive Lead for Sport, Councillor Robert Excell, said: “The Velopark is a great facility for riding but can also be used for a range of different sporting activities. It is imperative that we continue to develop sport locally in order to promote healthier lifestyles. This is another excellent sporting asset for the Bay providing a top quality circuit for residents and visitors.”
Andrew Parker, Regional Events Officer, British Cycling, said: “The Velopark is a fantastic facility for all ability riders. We will be providing programmes to help people develop their skills. Any riders wanting to give racing a go will be able to put their skills and fitness to the test in a series of races being held on site. These races will offer an ideal entry point into the sport for new riders as well as existing racers keen to make the most of the new facility.”
