Torquay’s Pavilion is a beautiful listed building which is in need of extensive remedial works to rectify some defects dating from the time the building was first designed and constructed. The Pavilion was built during 1911 / 1912 and was one of the first buildings to incorporate a full steel frame. The beautiful faence blocks to the exterior are ornately detailed. However, these “cutting edge” building practices of the early 20th Centrury are posing some serious risks to the future of the building.

Marina Developments Ltd (MDL), who have a lease until beyond 2100AD, are working with a hotel developer and operator to incorporate the Pavilion into a new hotel and residential development they are proposing for the adjoining Marina Car Park, which MDL also own.

TDA has been working with the owners and developers to find a workable solution to the building’s problems whilst also identifying a change of use which will create a viably economic future for this heritage asset.

Working with the Harbour Authority, improvements to the inner harbour quay are being proposed to create a modern public realm with cafes and restaurants and outside seating, all benefiting from the views over the inner harbour.

Torbay Council has now received a planning application and a decision on this iconic building is expected shortly. If the propsed scheme proceeds then it will secure a £26m investment into Torbay and create between 160 and 200 jobs.
