Parkfield House is Torbays flagship Youth and Activities Centre based in Paignton. This centre is a youth facility primarily for young people aged 11 to 19 years, although wider public use is available.
Torbay Council successfully applied for £4.8m from the government's MyPlace programme (part of the Big Lottery Fund) to finance the project. The multi-faceted scheme involved both new build and refurbishment works, comprising of an indoor and outdoor skate park, BMX track, climbing walls, indoor multi-sports facilities, arts performance space for music and live bands, media suite, recording studio, training centre, changing rooms and office space.
The services offered at Parkfield vary on a daily basis, from organised clubs and activities to specialised support services that are specifically for young people. All are geared towards both an identified need and exploiting enjoyment opportunities to further young peoples development and potential.
Designed by young people for young people, Parkfield is packed full of fantastic facilities. As the name suggests, MyPlace represents a resource with which the young people of Torbay can identify. The innovative project is aimed at getting young people to benefit from a range of sports, outdoor pursuits, performing arts activities, educational opportunities and support services.
From the earliest days of the project, a group of enthusiastic young teenagers known as 'Bay6,' in consultation with up to 3,000 local young people became involved in developing the centre's design. Bay6 helped with the waved roof, which reflects the seaside location and pitched roofs to resemble beach huts. They also contributed their own ideas to the creation of a BMX track of international standard and a world-class skateboard park.
The world class centre offers a wide range of high quality activities and support services for locals and visitors. It specialises in adventurous activities and performing arts on a prime beach front location next to Paignton's family friendly seafront.
The launch in October half term week 2011, with its fun packed programme of free activities attracted over 3,000 visitors.
