Brixham Fish Market

Fishmarket Fishmarket Fishmarket
Project Investment: £20,600,000
Completion Date: October 2010
The historic port of Brixham is benefiting from a major regeneration project aiming to enhance the local economy, which remains heavily based on the fishing industry. Unlike many other UK ports the Brixham fishery is largely sustainable and therefore has thrived in recent years resulting in the highest value catch in England and a world class reputation for quality. Brixham fish finds its way to local eateries, top London restaurants and the plates of consumers across Europe. The fishing industry is complemented by a number of supporting industries and also the world standard Astra Zeneca Environmental Laboratory. The town's thriving community has a strong tourism sector, thriving art community and a fascinating maritime heritage. The Brixham regeneration programme aims to support and develop these strengths and encourage a long term sustainable future for this bustling port.
These elements of the regeneration programme comprises:
  • Extended quayside space
  • New fish market
  • New Fish restaurant & Fishmongers
The Fishmarket development ran from 2007 to 2010 and was implemented in partnership with Brixham 21, the town's community regeneration partnership.
The Phase 1 works consisted of the construction of the new quay and new employment space. This would allow those existing fish processors who were staying in the new development to relocate prior to works to their existing premises. The second phase works to construct the new building on top of the deck commenced in July 2009. This was split in to 3 elements: the new fish market was operational in November 2009, the refurbished old fish market building became operational in May 2010 and the new offices, restaurant and storage units were complete in October 2010.
