Contemporary art exhibition comes to Cockington

This spring the world of two very different, local artists will collide in an exciting exhibition starting at Cockington Kitchen Gallery this week (Wednesday 15 February).

Artists Carl Cashman and James Derwin are once again joining forces following two previous successful exhibitions - 'Immersive Worlds' and 'Beyond Boundaries' held in the Spanish Barn at Torre Abbey in 2011.

Carl's work is based on hand painted geometrics and James works in a variety of media from ceramic sculpture to print. Those visiting the exhibition will see the hand painted work of Carl Cashman combined with bare sections of wood grain and powerful vivid colours, creating 3-Dimensional optical illusions. This will be contrasted by James Derwin's surreal and often illustrative imagery.

The two artists have collaborated on several different objects for this exhibition including large painting and sculpture, with the intention of combining their individual strengths.

Cllr Jeanette Richards, Executive Lead for Tourism and Environment, which also includes culture in the Bay, said: "I am delighted that Carl and James are working together again and am looking forward to seeing the combination of their work at Cockington Kitchen Gallery over the coming weeks.

"This is one of many exciting and thought-provoking exhibitions that have been held at the gallery in recent months and I cannot think of a more fitting and beautiful setting to showcase the wonderful talent that we have right here in the Bay."

Cllr Dave Butt, Regional Arts Council Board Member, said: "In the last few years Torbay has really gained a national reputation for hosting amazing exhibitions by both local and internationally renowned artist and we are fast becoming the cultural centre of the South-west.

"It is always exciting to see the results when two, very different artists come together and I would encourage everyone to take the beautiful stroll through Cockington and see the results for themselves."

The exhibition will run from Wednesday 15 February until Sunday 18 March from 10am until 4pm daily.

As part of our Kitchen Gallery programming creativetorbay.com offer this space once a year to new local talent in the Bay. They are given the opportunity to curate and manage exhibitions themselves with the aim to create one of the best small galleries in the South-west.
