Workhubs Torbay Project
Torbay Development Agency aims to generate economic prosperity for Torbay through regeneration and economic development, therefore is committed to creating the right conditions to enable business growth and improved employment opportunities.
There are now over 3,600 home-based businesses in the Bay area, a higher number than in either Exeter of Plymouth. Over one in nine working people in Torbay work mainly from home, and 63% of them are self-employed. Yet many are working ‘under the radar’ of business support agencies and their value to Torbay’s economy is unknown.
The TDA has commissioned the Workhubs Network to research into how they work and what they need, with the view to setting up Workhubs in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, depending on demand. Workhubs Network has asked local home-based businesses what they think of this idea, through an online survey and at a series of special meetings.
Workhubs offer an office-when-needed service, with a club-style membership for home-based and mobile workers. Users can share facilities for a low cost and also enjoy an ideal environment for collaboration and networking.
If the results of the research shows that there is a strong need for such facilities in Torbay, the TDA will look to provide these facilities to complement the extensive range of business support it provides, such as the successful South West Innovations Centres, which provide start-up office space for small businesses.
