Bay Photonics awarded £0.5 million for project research

Torbay-based Bay Photonics, specialists in Photonics device and assembly packaging, has been awarded £516,000 for two key projects. 

The company has been chosen as a packaging partner for Toshiba Research quantum technology project, which looks to address the increased vulnerability to cyber-security threats. 

Bay Photonics will also be working with project lead EFFECT Photonics, who have manufacturing based in Torbay. The project looks to find a cost-effective and compact packaging solution for photonics devices used to accommodate the growing demand in data communication bandwidth across the globe.  

Torbay’s Elected Mayor, Gordon Oliver, said: “Bay Photonics are one of a number of leading hi-tech companies in Torbay and South Devon that are significantly contributing to research and development within the sector. Their collaboration with other local photonics companies show the strength of the sector in the region, which is supported by the construction of EPIC and the continued success of Torbay’s Hi Tech Forum.”

Our innovative compact photonics packaging technology will allow us to work with partners to meet the future cost, performance and size criteria to enable connections fit for the future.  

“The Agile Quantum Safe Communications project with Toshiba will draw on our technical expertise to develop innovative techniques and build prototypes that ensure security and demonstrate benefits to the end user.” 

Technological advances in communication and data transfer are increasingly visible at home, at work and in businesses and organisations. 

In the last 5 years, the use of smartphones, tablets, video calling, Smart TVs, social media, and cloud storage has led to unprecedented bandwidth growth. It is forecast that by 2021, there will be 4.6 billion internet users and 27.1 billion networked devices and connections across the globe.  

Bandwidth growth is constrained by the cost and performance of the optical communication devices that interconnect datacentres. Current datacentre interconnect solutions sustain 100 Gigabits per second (Gbps) per wavelength, which is not adequate for future demand. The industry has identified a target of 1000Gbps (1Terabit per second) to satisfy demand in 2021 and beyond. 

Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is the leading bandwidth solution, demonstrating great potential to deliver data throughput of 1 Terabit per second (Tbps), something Bay Photonics specialise in. 

Glenn continued: “With more data being shared there is an increase in the threat to security. Whilst these projects are separate, they both look to provide a solution to the growing demands on emerging technology, something we are well-equipped to support.” 

EPIC, Torbay’s £8m Electronics and Photonics Innovation Centre, will provide open market access to purpose built hi tech facilities and specialist equipment to support R&D, prototyping, innovation and collaboration in emerging technologies, and developing new intellectual property. The Centre will be open in the Spring.
