The 2018 Herald Express South Devon Business Awards takes place on Friday 16 March, rewarding great businesses across South Devon.

TDA, Torbay Council’s economic development company, has supported businesses that appear across five of the award categories. The categories include Business Growth of the Year, Corporate Social or Environmental Responsibility, Digital Business of the Year, Innovative Business of the Year and Young Business Person of the Year.

Alan Denby, Director of Economic Strategy at TDA, said: “The South Devon Business Awards are an excellent opportunity to recognise the quality, aspiration and rich contribution to the local community of Torbay and South Devon businesses.

“Over the last 12 months, TDA has worked with over 220 local businesses. We understand the challenges that come with running a business and the time people invest in making their business a success. We are proud to help local businesses to start, grow and create jobs. We have worked with more local, innovative and ambitious businesses since the 2017 awards and it is great to see the awards recognising so many of these businesses.”

EFFECT Photonics, who are shortlisted for Business Growth of the Year 1-25 Employees, are an active member of the Torbay Hi Tech Forum, established to drive the growth of the electronics and photonics sector across Torbay and South Devon.

Supported through the TDA Aftercare Programme delivered in line with Torbay Council’s Economic Strategy, EFFECT Photonics is a great example of a foreign owned company growing and expanding in Torbay. Their growth highlights the strength of the photonics sector in Torbay, something TDA is very proud of. This is supported by the investment in Torbay’s Electronics and Photonics Innovation Centre (EPIC).

Two of TDA’s customers, Priority Pixels and LOOK Digital Puppets, are on the Digital Business of the Year shortlist.

Priority Pixels moved into the Manor House at Cockington Court to allow their company to continue to grow. As a tenant at Cockington Court, Priority Pixels has ongoing access to business support from TDA. Their team delivers web design and digital marketing to clients such as the NHS.

As well as being recognised for their work in digital, LOOK Digital Puppets has also been shortlisted for Innovative Business of the Year. The Torquay based animation and graphics studio has been exporting their own brand of cartoon design and animation to businesses all over the world. TDA is supporting LOOK Digital Puppets through the Business Growth Support Programme and helping them with their aspirations to create a digital hub within Torbay.

Flower La Vita, run by Vita Sumeiko, has been shortlisted for Young Business Person of the Year. Flower La Vita represents a start up business that has thrived and grown in their studios at Cockington Court. Surrounded by other creative businesses, Vita has used TDA business advice and attended many courses. As a result, Vita has taken her business to new heights.

Vita said: “The support I’ve received from TDA through my business journey has been fantastic. They have given me the extra confidence to take my start up business, run with it and make it what it is today. Not only do I meet with business advisors regularly on a 1-2-1 basis, I benefit from business workshops, training and support in areas such as marketing, digital and finance.”

Bay Bouncers Community Interest Company has met with TDA Business Advisors to help refocus their business plan as their business has grown as part of the Business Growth Support Programme. The company has worked with over 150 volunteers to deliver 38,000 sessions to children and young people in Torbay. To reach their ambitions, they are looking to invest in new premises to provide more sessions.
