To attract investment, we need YOU!

Within the next fortnight we are about to begin the process of devising our 2017-2022 inward investment strategy for Torbay. It is an exciting prospect as inward investment directly supports the Economic Strategy for Torbay, which is currently out for consultation and if you haven’t had a chance as yet to take a look you can here:

The inward investment strategy will focus on our strongest sectors, where we have a clear investment proposition and where expanding companies can identify clear business case reasons to operate from Torbay. We will also be taking a look at those sectors where we feel we are gaining some critical mass and may have something to offer, something that others want to be a part of.

In no particular order, the frequent questions that businesses ask when considering whether Torbay makes their ‘shortlist’ are often relating to the availability and cost of a skilled workforce, suitable and fit for purpose premises, infrastructure and fast access to customer markets and of course not forgetting access to relevant funding where and if appropriate.

Within many of our key sectors we look to ensure we can outline a clear provision across all of these needs as well as many others, or that we are working towards providing them, as is the case for property. By bringing forward property schemes such as Claylands Business Park, for expanding manufacturing businesses, or the Electronics and Photonics Innovation Centre in Paignton for tech companies, we can demonstrate modern, fit for purpose space.

There are of course other aspects, which very often play an important part in securing a company ‘landing’ in Torbay, the slightly softer parts of the Torbay offer. I am lucky to be able to demonstrate a strong, welcoming and supportive business community to potential investors who have a shared desire to see our beautiful Bay prosper. Well connected business men and women within our great companies, who are ready to put forward the case for Torbay to whomever they meet. These are the fantastic Ambassadors for Torbay.

But we also need to pull upon those no longer in the Bay but with who have links either through work, family, school or being from the Bay. These are the Torbay Diaspora. They undoubtedly will be across all corners of the World and act as our global PR team sharing the messages as to why companies should invest in Torbay. If you know of people who fit this bill, please do let me know.

As we progress the investment strategy work colleagues and I will be in touch with some of the businesses across Torbay to ensure we don’t miss any of the important detail or golden nuggets that investing companies want to hear.

I hope you will be able to support us to ensure the strategy enables us to build upon the successes we have already had, those we are soon to announce and those that will happen in the future.

Torbay has ambitions for high quality schemes delivering investment, creating employment, returning value for partners and helping Torbay to be a greater place. There is a commitment from Torbay Council and TDA to invest and support growth, building confidence in Torbay. With delivery of £60m+ of projects coming forward this year and £140M of other projects in pipeline, Torbay’s time is now.
