Supported by the Torbay Growth Fund, Scymaris was able to recruit pivotal positions within the business and create employment ahead of schedule.

Scymaris has an ambitious programme of growth, looking to grow to 80 staff in the next three years and the company is already expanding their global reach, winning clients from key markets in Europe and the US.

Torbay Council’s Elected Mayor and Lead for Finance and Regeneration, Gordon Oliver, said: “The £1m Torbay Growth Fund has both helped businesses in Torbay to expand and encourage investment in the area, which is integral to creating more jobs. Major companies and investors are showing confidence in the Bay by investing in significant projects to support their growth and development and completing their recruitment ahead of schedule demonstrates the skills that exist in the Torbay and wider South Devon workforce.”

With 15 new roles in place, the company is now expanding its reach further into markets in Germany, United States, and subsequently Japan and South Korea.

Tim Derrington, CEO at Scymaris, said: “We developed our business plan focused on new market opportunities in order to grow the business. The company needed to secure key staff and actively recruit senior positions into the business to progress this.

“Finding experienced candidates in a financial role, Head of Analytical Chemistry and other scientific roles was critical to moving the business forward. Filling these positions enables us to develop products, move into new markets and look into an export strategy.”

Scymaris Ltd provides high quality and cost effective ecotoxicology, environmental fate, plant metabolism and analytical chemistry services to the global agrochemical, pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

Scymaris became the anchor tenant at the Plymouth University Brixham Environmental Laboratory site in 2016. This World Class facility is on a site that has specialised in laboratory services to the Agrochemical, Speciality Chemical and Pharmaceutical industries for over 65 years.

The company is backed by Lynx Group who are based in Austin, Texas, US, and as a new company in Torbay, needed introductions to other local key players in the industry to develop its partnerships and increase the opportunities to work collaboratively with other businesses and organisations.

In the time leading up to locating at the lab, Scymaris developed an ongoing relationship with TDA, who introduced them to other local and regional partners, such as Heart of the South West LEP.

Since being on site, TDA has also worked with the company to form relationships with South Devon College to explore the opportunities and develop the skilled workforce in this industry in Torbay.

Tim Derrington continued: “Scymaris is experiencing a healthy supply chain and works well operationally in Torbay. With the support of TDA, the company would like to look to create the beginnings of an emerging life science cluster. This group would have common requirements, such as scientific instrument platforms, and be able to share best practices and look to address demand and requirements of these companies or organisations.”
