From Business Start Up to Award Winner in 9 months

8th September 2016

Film maker John Tomkins set up his business Emberlense in December last year and in his first year of trade scooped a Torbay Hour Social Media Award for Best Use of Film, Photo and Design.

Supported by TDA through the New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) programme, John received 1-2-1 advice on his business plan and was provided a business mentor to guide him through the start up stages of his company’s development.

TDA Business Advisor, Nick Williams, said: “Advising John and partnering him with an established local business enabled him to develop his business plan and realise the potential of his business idea. This led to a swift start up, with Emberlense established and trading within 2 months of our initial meeting.

“The NEA programme gives entrepreneurs like John the support they need to get their business idea off the ground. It’s great to see him getting early results and rewards for his efforts and I look forward to continuing to work with him to help his business develop and grow.”

John Tomkins said: “Through the support of the TDA and the NEA I was able to make my business idea become reality. The advice and mentoring gave me the confidence to take my business forward and the award caps off what has been an excellent first 9 months. The mentoring side of the scheme has been very valuable to me, impacting the way I approached new business opportunities in my first few months of trading.  Both Nick Williams and my mentor John Doherty, Owner of Dots Pantry, are a great support . I am looking forward to developing my business further and seeing where the next steps take me.

“I am very passionate and determined to raise the profile of film making in Torbay by promoting films made here and helping young people get into the film industry. I was honoured to receive the Torbay Hour Award for Best Use of Film. It was great to be recognised on a personal level and have a platform to help raise the profile of film makers in the Bay, which further supports a recent film festival I promoted.”

The New Enterprise Allowance can provide job seekers with financial and advisory support to help start their own business. More information can be found at www.tda-business.com/starting-a-business or by contacting Rebecca Salter on 01803 208369
