Pop Up The High Street

Pop up the High Street is looking for new retailers

Pop up the High Street, which is located in Union Street Torquay, offers independent retailers in Torbay the chance to experience life on the high street for up to 6 weeks for just £30 a week. This provides home businesses or companies with an online presence the opportunity to have a 'real world' physical retail space, without the expensive overheads or risk.

Torbay’s Executive Lead for Business, Cllr Richard Haddock, said: “So far, Pop up the High Street, has seen over 50 applications from prospective tenants looking to retail in the pop up shop, with many retailers booking many months in advance to secure their preferred dates. However, there is still plenty of space left for the remainder of 2016.”

To date, Pop up the High Street has given over 20 retailers the opportunity to interact with customers on a personal, one-to-one level, receive valuable feedback and gain a better understanding of their target markets.

The project is aimed at new businesses or those without a physical presence on the high street that would like the chance to experience what it takes to become a successful retailer.

Artist Emma Childs, who spent 2 weeks retailing her work in January 2016 at Pop up the High Street, not only made a significant amount of sales but was headhunted by 2 local art galleries interested in showcasing her paintings. She has since booked another 4 weeks’ worth of slots at the shop.

In addition to the retail space, each tenant is offered free business support and advice from Business Advisor Liz Edwards whilst retailing in the Pop up.

Liz Edwards said: “We have seen a fantastic range of retailers in the shop and each tenant has gained valuable knowledge from their experience. I am extremely proud of the success of the project and look forward to working with more independent retailers across the year to help explore and realise their retail potential.”
