Pop In to the Pop Up for your Christmas gifts

Pop up the High Street, Torquay’s pop up shop on Union Street, is full of exciting retailers for the last few weeks of the project, leading up to Christmas.

Pop up the High Street, which gives retailers the chance to gain a real life experience of retailing on Torquay high street, has played host to over 40 local retailers selling anything from children’s clothes to hand painted art to Christmas baubles since it’s opening in August 2015.

Cllr Richard Haddock, Torbay’s Executive Lead for Business, said: “As this project comes to a close, it is important that we celebrate its success. It is great to see that there continues to be a real demand and vibrancy around our town centres.

“A high number of retailers that would not have had the opportunity to experience life on the high street have enjoyed putting their retail business to the test, thanks to this initiative. With support from our business and regeneration teams, many of the Pop Up retailers have gone on to open new premises and continue their venture on a high street in and around Torbay. I would encourage shoppers to continue to use the shop to find unique toys, clothes, books and gifts for Christmas.”

The project, which has seen over 100 applications and has showcased over 45 independent retailers, was lead by TDA and funded by the Coastal Communities Fund. It has been considered a great success by the parties involved, as the majority of the retailers involved have gone on to expand their business online or gain a physical retail presence.

Aside from the physical shop space, retailers have benefited from free business advice from a qualified Business Advisor.

Liz Edwards, Business Advisor for the project said: “It has been a real privilege to work on this project, supporting local businesses while focusing on bringing more retailers to the high streets in Torbay. Our team will continue to work with businesses that are looking to start up or grow, and are looking for new premises and opportunities across the region.”
