US CEO to meet with Torbay Hi Tech cluster

CEO of Boston Micromachines Corporation (BMC), Paul Bierden, is in Torbay for two days to visit members of the Torbay Hi Tech Forum.

The company are looking to expand into Europe. The TDA, working alongside the England Development Agency, have arranged a visit programme to highlight the opportunities available to the company by having a UK base in Torbay.

England Development Agency have been actively promoting Torbay in the US, in target investment sectors including photonics & electronics, life sciences and medical and healthcare technologies, through targeted campaigns and trade show attendance.

Jason Buck, Investment Development Manager, TDA, said: “We are very excited to welcome a company of this magnitude to Torbay. It gives us a fantastic opportunity to showcase the expertise, knowledge and skilled workforce we have.

“Through our inward investment programme with England Development Agency we are actively supporting inward investors like BMC to help them understand the local business community and wider regional strengths. Some of the Torbay photonics and electronics cluster share the same customers so there should be common ground.”

The visit programme includes visits to TDA business centres, South Devon College, Brixham Laboratory and photonics and engineering facilities at hi tech businesses in Torbay.

As a leading provider of advanced microelectromechanical systems (MEMs) BMC will be looking to work with Torbay’s most innovative businesses in the technology sector and others across the wider South West area.

BMC have also received support from the Invest in the Heart of the South West LEP Soft Landing programme designed to attract inward investment into the LEP region by supporting fact finding visits to the area.

With BMC, TDA are also consulting a portfolio of essential services including legal advice, banking, insurance and recruitment through the TDA’s ‘Torbay Touchdown’ soft landings programme.

Paul Bierden, who has an engineering background, founded the company with Boston University (BU) Professor and current BU Photonics Centre Director, Thomas Bifano.
