Award Winning South Devon Export Network goes from strength to strength

29th January 2015

Categories: Latest News

After an award winning year in 2014, the South Devon Export Network (SDEN) will be continuing to grow and expand its networking opportunities in 2015.

Last year the SDEN covered three continents, visited five countries, had over 200 attendees at events and helped many businesses grow in the export market.

And to reward their hard work, and with the joint efforts of the Torbay Development Agency (TDA) and the UK Trade and Investment, the SDEN picked up the Enterprising Britain Award for Supporting Export from the House of Commons.

Torbay’s Mayor, Gordon Oliver, said: “The excellent work of the SDEN has seen Torbay and South Devon’s export community continue to grow. And with the South West being top of only three regions in the UK seeing an increase in the number of businesses exporting (compared to the same time last year) and the success in receiving the Enterprising Britain Award, 2015 is looking to be a bigger and better year!”

Looking ahead to 2015, it’s going to be another exciting year for international trade across South Devon with plans including overseas trade missions to help businesses meet new customers and explore potential export markets. Export workshops will also be running throughout the year and will be delivered by experienced business advisers to help those companies considering exporting. There will also be tailored one-to-one business support on exporting provided by the TDA which is open to anyone.

The SDEN meetings will also be on the move. Traditionally they have always taken place at Vantage Point Innovation Centre, but in 2015 they will be held in a range of locations around South Devon - from Torquay to Newton Abbot and further afield.

Alan Archer, the Chairman of SDEN and The Select Group, said “Our quarterly meetings are consistently well attended by key players in international trade. They are bursting with useful information and well catered for with an enjoyable informal buffet after a busy day’s work. I have years of international business experience and these sessions always provide me with something new and practical to take away.”

Born out of international trade being identified as a key topic at the MTI ’12 event, the SDEN held its inaugural meeting in November 2013 as part of South Devon Enterprise Week. The SDEN has continued to grow from strength to strength covering some exciting and diverse subjects to help businesses in their expansion into overseas markets, which include: United States of America, Russia, The Netherlands, Hungary, and Canada. This has exposed South Devon businesses to a potential 521.5 million extra customers.

However, the real added value from the SDEN comes from the stories from local companies on their experiences in trading overseas. A range of different businesses across South Devon, including design and marketing services from Unex Design, Teignbridge Propellers, entertainment and talent agency Scarlett Entertainments, garden tool manufacturer Reedy Supplies, and early swimming lesson provider Water Babies - which franchises it’s services around the world - demonstrate that exporting is not just restricted to physical products, and that due to the revolution of the internet, services are increasingly being exported.

The next SDEN will take place on Wednesday 25 February 2015 at Vantage Point Innovation Centre, Paignton from 5.30pm – 8.00pm. It will include presentations on the German market, how to find new customers abroad, and a case study about trading internationally from David Perry, Managing Director of Perry of Oakley Ltd.
