Brixham residents and organisations are getting behind a project to create an impressive design to enhance and promote the new Brixham Fish Quay redevelopment.
In September last year artist Kate Green was commissioned by Torbay Council, in partnership with the Torbay Development Agency and Brixham 21, to produce a new public piece of artwork, which will compliment and complete recent works to the area. It will be sited on the main south westerly wall of the new employment building next to the South West Coast Path, from Oxen Cove car park to the inner harbour. Since Kate's appointment her 'My Brixham' project has inspired many groups and individuals in the town to contribute towards the final design. Activities to date include: More activities are also being organised over the next few months including 'live' portrait sessions in the town and a giant rangoli art session, where members of the public will be able to make a temporary artwork on the floor around the harbour using natural materials. As a photographer and digital artist Kate will weave all these multi-layered artworks to create her final piece. This artwork is expected be in place in September.. Artist Kate Green said: "I am thrilled by the level of support from people in Brixham. I really want the final artwork to reflect what Brixham really means to local people and for them to feel connected with the final piece. "I hope they will continue to support 'My Brixham' and enjoy getting involved in such a fabulous project." Cabinet Member with responsibility for arts and events, Councillor Dave Butt, said: "It's encouraging to see so many people in Brixham getting behind this project and contributing towards the final artwork. Torbay Council is committed to looking at creative ways in which we can revitalise our town centres and support local businesses as well as the creative and cultural community. This commissioned artwork will reinforce the local identity, enhance the area and attract visitors into Brixham to boost the local economy. "It's all part of the wider regeneration project in Brixham, which is progressing well and is so important to the town's future economic prosperity." Brixham 21 Director and Chairman of the Heritage, Leisure and Cultural working group, Christine Hodgetts, said: "First impressions are so important and this artwork will enhance the walkway from Freshwater Quarry and Oxen Cove car parks into Brixham. The walkway is the first thing that people see when they head into town from the car parks and many coach passengers use this route as well.
"I am really pleased so many people have got involved in this project and I look forward to seeing the final artwork."
