Torbay Council and its regenerative arm, the Torbay Development Agency (TDA) are expecting to find out this week if Torbay has been chosen to host the INTERREG IVB North West Europe Event 2010.
The UK will be holding the NWE presidency this year and the theme will be Innovation. The event is expected to attract around 400 delegates from across Europe, including economic development professionals, local government officers and academics. It will be reviewing the progress of the North West Europe funding programme and looking at projects which can be delivered between different member states.
The TDA has submitted a bid to host the event and is the only partner in the region to have applied for it. Torbay will be competing against strong candidates - Belfast, Cambridge, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle.
If it is successful, the main event will be held at the Riviera International Conference Centre in December and other venues around the Bay will be utilised for smaller sessions.
Torbay will also be required to offer case studies on the theme of innovation, and where transnational cooperation has played a crucial role in the region.
Torbay's Mayor, Nick Bye, said: "To host a European event like this would be a huge honour and achievement for the Bay. I sincerely hope we are successful in this bid. Torbay is an ideal venue offering excellent facilities, value for money and a beautiful location.
"Events like these do so much to support our tourism industry and local businesses, bringing thousands of pounds into the local economy. It will also be a great opportunity to showcase the Bay to potential investors and future visitors and demonstrate that we can become a centre for business as well as tourism."
