Torbay Council is happy to confirm Tesco's continued commitment to a new supermarket in Brixham.
In view of the changed economic circumstances, the council are delighted that subject to planning permission there will be more than £20 million of investment in the town.
The new Tesco store will be built on Brixham town centre car park. The proposed development is part of the multi-million pound transformation of Brixham, which is being led by Torbay Development Agency with partners including the South West RDA. It aims to rejuvenate the town centre's economy and created or safeguarded 381 fishing and non-fishing related jobs for people in Brixham. The South West RDA has invested £8.4 million in the town.
Torbay Council's Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Councillor Chris Lewis, said: "I am extremely pleased that Tesco have reconfimed its commitment to Brixham. This is an exciting time for Brixham and the fact that this project is still going ahead, despite the current economic climate, is in itself encouraging news.
"The new supermarket will enable people to do a main weekly family food shop and visit the neighbouring town centre shops, which will encourage people to stay in the town centre instead of driving out of Brixham.
"The council and its regeneration arm, the Torbay Development Agency, will continue to work closely with Tesco to push this scheme forward."
Juliette Bishop, Tesco Corporate Affairs Manager, said: "We are delighted to be working with the council to bring forward this development that will support Brixham and its regeneration. As our plans move forward, we will consult and involve the local community with the proposals."
James Wilson, Operations Manager for the South West RDA, said: "This is good news for Brixham. Tesco's commitment to develop a retail super store within the town centre is a huge boost to the local economy. This proposal follows on from the fish market development. It is part of the wider ambition for the regeneration of Brixham, to improve the town's economic prosperity as a modern coastal market town."
Brixham 21's Chairman, Jon Andrewes, said: "This is good news for people and businesses in Brixham. This well known supermarket will enhance the area and will provide a valuable facility for residents who don't want to leave Brixham to do a large grocery shop. This should have spin-off effects for surrounding businesses in the town centre."
